International Conference on “Relevance of Social Sciences in Higher Education” [Mar.14-15, 2012]

The college hosted a 2 day International Conference on “Relevance of Social Sciences in Higher Edcuation” organized by the Department of Social Sciences. The Conference had the auspicious beginning by the lighting of the lamp. Principal Dr. (Mrs.) Neelam Kamra welcomed the Chief Guest, Dr. Satish Sharma, Director Colleges, DAV College Managing Committee, New Delhi, the guests, the delegates and the Principals of various institutions. Dr. Satish Sharma showered his blessings and the best wishes for the successful completion of the Conference. He appreciated the organizers for selecting such a relevant theme for the International Conference. He said this is the need of the hour to arouse the interest of the students to study social sciences as it gives a road map and guides them to the right path.

Mrs. Renu Bhandari, Head, Department of Political Sciences in the college acquainted the dignitaries and the delegates with the theme of the Conference. She said this Conference is organized to highlight the need of Social Sciences in the modern society, the inclusion of Social Sciences will help in creating an orderly society and it will also help in measuring the social development of the society. Dr. Sukhdev Singh Sohal, Head, School of Social Sciences & Department of History, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar in his Keynote and Inaugural Address told that the advent of market forces & Globalization are posing threat to the existence of Social Sciences in the Higher Education. In order to make Social Sciences relevant, pertinent and potent, Social Sciences Scientists have to scrutinize their own concept about how society works and engage in vigorous self examination of their approaches in order to define common tasks and set a shared agenda. He said that there is a need, to reinforce the interface between decision makers and the Social Sciences community as the objective is to be Social Sciences in society rather than Social Sciences on society.

Dr. Gurnam Singh Sanghera, a retired Professor from the University of British Columbia, Canada gave his valuable remarks about the Conference. He remarked that all our great Gurus, Rishis were Social Sciences Scientists. He emphasized on the need for Social Sciences and pointed that they modify, transform and teaches values, ethics & morality to the society. He also told that in Western Countries Social Sciences play a vital role in every sphere of human life and there is no dearth of jobs in these avenues in the West. Dr. Sudarshan Kapoor, Chairman, LMC presented vote of thanks. The event was graced by many renowned scholars and intellectuals from all over the world. The august gathering included Dr. Jagroop Singh, Head, Department of Political Sciences, GNDU; Mr. Jagdeep Singh, a renowned Social Scientist from Brisbane, Australia;  Ms. Ranjeet Kaur from Australia; Dr. Navdeep Singh Tung, Dr. Suninder Kaur Tung and Dr. Rajinder Kaur from the Deparment of Psychology, GNDU; Dr. M.S. Gill Department of Sociology, GNDU; Mr. Harish Sharma, Deparment of History GNDU; Principal Dr. K.N. Kaul; Principal Mrs. Neera Sharma; Principal Mrs. Anjana Gupta and Principals of various other institutions.

The two parallel technical sessions were held in the afternoon, technical session I was be chaired by Dr. M.S. Gill, Department of Sociology, Guru Nanak Dev University and Technical session II was presided over by Dr. Jagroop Sekhon, Head, Department of Political Sciences, Guru Nanak Dev University. Fourteen papers were presented in the two parallel Technical Sessions.

In the evening, two parallel Technical Sessions were organized. The Technical Session III was chaired by Dr. Navdeep Tung and Six papers were presented during this session whereas session IV was chaired by Dr. Gurnam Singh and seven papers were read out in this session.
