NSS

 

NSS Unit of the college actively participates in various social welfare programmes. Volunteers’ involvement in various community service projects, like help and assistance to inmates of old age home 'Milvartan', students of DAV Red Cross School for Special Children is commendable.

Objectives

  • To enrich the student's personality and deepen her understanding of the social environment in which she lives.
  • To develop socio economic awareness and encourage the students to impart the same to the illiterate community of the area adopted.
  • To develop socio economic activities designed to tackle social problems.

Incentives & Weightage

  • The college awards concessions and incentives to the best NSS Volunteers.
  • The volunteers get additional 3 percent marks in aggregate for seeking admission to higher class after graduation. Punjab State Youth Award of Rs.5,000 is given to volunteers who give distinguished social and national services.
  • NSS volunteers would get a special 10 percent discount on the total cost of all the college trips and tours.
  • Best NSS Volunteer is honoured on Annual Awards Day.
 

Days celebrated 

  • International Yoga Day was celebrated on 21 June 2015 by organizing Yoga camp in the government school of Qila Jiwan Singh village, adopted by the NSS unit of college.
  • Sadbhawna Diwas was celebrated on 21 Aug. 2015. A debate competition was organized on the theme of National Integration. Shivani & Mehak of M.Com Sem I were awarded 1 & 2 prize respectively. Pratibha of BA Sem-V presented a documentary on her visit & her working experience as an international intern with AIESEC Mauritius where she worked on the project AIDS.
  • Gandhi Jayanti & Lal Bahadur Shastri Jyanti were celebrated on 2 Oct. 2015 by organizing 'Swachh Bharat Abhiyan' to make India a better place to live in. A part of Lawrence Road has been adopted for regular cleanliness.
Awareness Activities
  • The volunteers educated the students about self-cleanliness and cleaning the nearby places in the NSS camp organized on 21 Dec. 2015 in Government Elementary School at Angarh.
  • Mr K.K. Sahini of Punjab Red Cross Unit delivered a lecture on health awareness in th the NSS camp organized on 25 Dec. 2015.
  • Mrs. Anjana Anand (Senior Branch Manager), Mr. Bhushan Malik (Manager Regional office) OBC, Amritsar and Mr. Ranjodh (Manager Branch office), OBC Manawala delivered a lecture on 'Financial Literacy' in which they advised the students to inculcate the habit of saving by opening up bank account under various schemes in the NSS camp organized on 23 Dec. 2015 in Government Elementary
    School at Angarh.  
  • A workshop on health and personal hygiene and tree plantation was organized in Government High School, Manawala on 22 Dec. 2015 in which Ms. Veerawali, Assistant Professor, PG Department of Computer Science & Applications explained the concept of e-paper and e-shopping to the students. The faculty of Science informed the students about health and personal hygiene and demonstrated the
    steps to clean their hands.
  • A two days workshop was organized at Cutting and Stitching Centre - “SHAKTI MAHILA SAHITA KENDAR” at Angad on 22nd to 23rd Dec. 2015 in which Assistant Professors of Home Science Department, Mrs. Benu, Mrs. Harpreet Dhillion, Mrs. Harpreet Aneja and Ms. Isha taught the girls the technique of tie and dye, marbling,pleating, knotting and dyeing the clothes, block printing and stencil printing.
  • NSS Unit in collaboration with Department of Science of BBK DAV College organized a guest lecture on 'Discover Healthy Eating' on 7 Apr. 2016 to celebrate World Health Day. Dietician Ms. Ridhi Khanna Lecturer, Department of Nutrition, Govt. College, Amritsar was the resource person for the same. In an interactive session, she emphasized the need to adopt a healthy lifestyle by making small changes in
    food habits which can make a big difference. Besides, a video was shown on Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR): a Life-Saving Skill in Medical Emergency by Department of Zoology. The students of NSS and B.Sc. (Med) displayed posters on the related theme.
Joy of Sharing Activities
  • NSS volunteers distributed copies, pencils, fruits, sweets, biscuits etc. in the NSS st camp organized on 21 Dec. 2015 in Government Elementary School at Angarh
  • NSS Volunteers visited 'Mother Teresa Home' Gumtala on 27 Dec. 2015 and distributed blankets, chocolates, copies, clothes and diapers to the little angels.
  • NSS organized a Blood Donation Camp in collaboration with NSS and Red Cross Units of the college on 2 Mar. 2016 in which 105 units of blood were donated.
Collection
  • The volunteers collected approx. Rs.3,000 from the sale proceeds of a Rakhi Exhibition organized on 28 Aug. 2015 and donated it to Red Cross School for Special Children.
