Department of Science of BBK DAV College for Women organized a Science Carnival Crux-2016 on 23.01.2016. The Carnival was organized to celebrate 30 years of Excellence of Department of Biotechnology, which was also the main funding agency for the event. Various scientific themes like waste management, nuclear energy, laser technology, genetic engineering, robotics, applications of nano technology and biotechnology in diseases management were taken up in the science carnival.
Dr. Paramjit Singh Judge, Dean, Academic Affairs, GNDU, Amritsar was the Chief Guest for the inaugural session. Expressing his views, he advised students to inculcate scientific spirit amongst them as it would help them to develop analytical thinking free of prejudice or bias. Dr. R. K. Mahajan, Dean, College Development Council, GNDU, Amritsar was the Guest of Honour for the event. While addressing budding scientists, he said that starting Interdisciplinary courses with a focus on Sciences and Humanities is the need of the hour. Government of India is initiating various such programmes at school and college level as our major national laboratories are short of new scientists. Adding further, he said that events of this kind should be organised regularly as such events encourage students to pursue their career in science stream.
Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia said that the biggest contribution of science has been nurturing the of the scientific temper and the sense of rationality. She added that DBT has sanctioned a financial support of Rs 58 lac for a period of three years for strengthening Life Science Education and Biotechnology training at the undergraduate level, and said that BBK DAV College is deeply focused on research and academic ventures.
During the event, Dr. Poonam Khullar, Head, Chemistry department of BBK DAV College was honoured for getting a new project on Nano mission sponsored with a grant of Rs. 54.60 lacs from Department of Science and Technology (DST) Government of India.
In the valedictory session, Dr Shaveta Mohan thanked the guests for their valuable time. Dr. R C Singh, Head, Department of Physics, GNDU, Amritsar and Dr. Arvinder Kaur, Head, Department of Zoology, GNDU, Amritsar were the Guests of Honour for the valedictory session.
Nearly 150 students from various schools and colleges of the city participated in competitions like poster presentation, model presentation, scientific speaking, scientific drama and scientific photography. Overall trophy for Junior level was bagged by DAV International level while the senior level trophy was won by BBK DAV College for Women, Amritsar.
