6th National Voters Day was organized by District Election Commission, Amritsar, in Urvi auditorium, BBK DAV College for Women, to spread awareness among young voters regarding their voting rights.
While welcoming the guests, Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia said that the College has always been an active participant in such initiatives. She added that in the year 2012-13 the college enrolled 400 new voters and in 2013-14 the number was 200. She said that UGC and NAAC has made national development as one of the crucial goals along with education, and BBK DAV College is committed to the fulfillment these objectives.
Deputy Commissioner Mr. Ravi Bhagat, while addressing the gathering, said that Voters Day is being celebrated every year since 2011. While showing his concern for new voters, he said that most of the youth doesn’t vote and this day is a platform to meet young voters and make them aware about their rights. He appealed to the youth to vote for the right candidate as that is the right path for national development. Further, he added that District Administration has come with a new Facebook page ‘DIWA- Dynamic and Inspirational Women of Amritsar’ in which any girl can share her inspirational stories and achievements. He thanked the college for extending its support to the District Administration for such programmes. He also made the audience take a pledge to cast their vote fearlessly and responsibly.
During the function, an audio visual presentation was played in which Ex- Chief Election Commission of India, Sh. H. S. Brahma appealed to the voters to cast their votes. Besides, a song was sung by students ‘Cast Your Vote’ which was composed by Department of Music, BBK DAV College. The Deputy Commissioner gave prizes to winners of various competitions conducted by District Administration in the context of vote awareness. Students of BBK DAV College won top prizes in the various competitions like debate, slogan writing and painting. S. Harinder Sohal was awarded as ‘sweep icon’ as he represented Punjab with his song on vote awareness in Delhi. The song was recorded in college campus with the help of faculty in the college.
