BBK DAV College for Women, Amritsar organized Sports Awards Day to honour the achievements of the outstanding players in Urvi Auditorium. Dr. Raj Kumar Verka, Vice Chairman, Union Minister of State (Status), National Commission for Scheduled Castes, Government of India was the chief guest. Dr. Harvinder Singh Randhawa, Deputy Director Sports and Head, Department of Physical Education, GNDU was the guest of honour for the function.
While welcoming the guests, Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia said that it is a proud moment for the college to honour the BBK DAV students who have worked relentlessly to maintain college performances in various sports championships, due to which the college is one of the leading sports institutions of the northern India. She presented the annual sports report and briefly gave an overview of the achievements of players in various competitions. She added that college has always facilitated players by giving them financial assistance, free hostel stay and free transportation for their overall grooming.
Addressing the students, Dr. Raj Kumar Verka said that female foeticide is one of the major problems faced by the state of Punjab. He added that we need to do away with the orthodox traditions which are hampering the development of women in the society. He announced financial assistance of Rs. 5 Lac for the college.
Speaking on the occasion, Dr. Randhawa said that BBK DAV College is one of the best institutions which bring about the overall development of the students, in academics, sports and cultural activities. He added that the contribution of the college players is commendable in lifting the Maulana Abul Kalam Azad (MAKA TROPHY).
Nearly 300 players & 50 coaches were honoured. An alumni of the college, Mrs. Pana Chaudhary, the cyclist, who represented India in Commonwealth Games 2014 was specially honoured on the occasion. Ms. Seema Verma was conferred with the Best Player Award for her outstanding performance in both academics and sports. Besides, 16 students were honoured for their excellence in both sports and academics. Members of Sports Club were also honoured.
BBK sports women enthralled the audience with their performance in rhythmic gymnastics, aesthetic gymnastics, yoga and rope mulkhumb. Sports News Bulletin was also released on this event.
Mr. Sudershan Kapoor, Chairman, LMC, thanked the dignitaries for sparing their valuable time. Mr. J.K. Luthra, Honorary Treasurer, DAV CMC, New Delhi, members of Arya Samaj & Mrs. Sweety Bala, Head, Department of Physical Education, along with other faculty members, attended the programme.
