Title: UGC-sponsored Interdisciplinary Seminar on Innovation and Best Practices in Higher Education [Feb.22, 2018]

IQAC cell of BBK DAV College for Women organised UGC sponsored Interdisciplinary Seminar on Innovation and Best Practices in Higher Education. The objective of the seminar was to define the role of teaching and evaluation in the student-learning process, to provide an opportunity to teachers to deliberate upon the present scenario, challenges before Higher Education in India and to discuss the innovative ideas and best practices being followed in teaching learning evaluation process.

The seminar began with the DAV Gaan followed by 'Lighting the lamp' which symbolises light of knowledge. Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia and Chairman Mr. Sudershan Kapoor welcomed the guests Dr. TS Banipal, Dean, College Development Council, Guru Nanak Dev University, Amritsar, Prof. Dr. Gurpal Singh, Professor and Chairman, Department of Evening Studies, Multidisciplinary Research Center and Dean Faculty of Languages SCD Govt. College, Ludhiana and Dr. Satinder Pal Singh, Former Pro Vice Chancellor, Guru Nanak Dev University with the saplings. Principal Dr. Pushpinder Walia in her welcome address introduced the mission and vision behind the seminar. She also congratulated the IQAC Cell of the college for organising this seminar. Mrs. Rajni Mehra apprised the audience about the objectives and theme of the seminar. Prof. TS Banipal in his Presidential Address congratulated the college for choosing the relevant theme for the seminar. He said this is very important theme because there is pressure from UGC, NAAC and various other bodies to implement quality education in higher studies. He further said the innovations in higher studies vary from time to time depending upon the change in technology. He stated that sustainable development can be maintained only if we reach out everybody. He also said there is need to have best practices like having good knowledge, good ethics and being good citizen.

Dr. Gurpal Singh in his keynote address highlighted that DAV Institutions are doing excellent work in introducing innovative practices in Higher Studies. He said that today, system of education is different and he gave some suggestions to bring about change in the Higher Education. Firstly he said new ideas should be introduced like breaking the boundaries from within to without and there is need to become interdisciplinary. Secondly, he said to adopt new methods of studies. Lastly, he talked about innovative techniques in the course curriculum.

Dr. Satinderpal Singh speaking on the occasion felicitated the college for choosing wonderful issue for the seminar. He said in today's complex scenario of higher education there is still promotion and enhancement of excellence and quality education. He focused on four I's to be adopted as best practices which are identify, implement, institutionalize and internalize. The documentary on 'Swach Bharat Samridh Bharat' was also shown in the inaugural session. The inaugural session was followed by technical session-I which was chaired by Mrs. Manju Duggal. There were eight paper presenters in this session who presented their papers on different topics- Dr. Menu Nanda, Mr. Ankush Mahajan presented paper on Use of Information Technology in teaching of English, Ms. Aarti Mahajan, Role of ICT in teaching and learning, Dr. Prathna Swani, Relevance of Moral Intelligence in Higher Education, Ms. Poonam Mahajan, Ms. Sakshi told about Web 2 tools integrated in teaching and learning, Ms. Sukhmandeep Kaur, Ms. Arjinder Kaur.

The speakers in the technical session-II were Ms. Manveet Kaur and Ms. Gagandeep Kaur (Presented by Ms. Manveet Kaur) – Innovative and best practices in higher education, Ms. Simarpreet Kaur – Role of Innovative methods of teaching in forcing creativity in education, Dr. Pooja Kalia – Role of ethics and values in higher education, Ms Priyanka Chugh and Dr. Neetu Bala presented by Ms. Priyanka – A Comprehensive study of Eco Friendly Campus Initiatives in India, Dr. Tina Vohra - ICT in Higher Education: The opportunities and Challenges, Ms. Priyanka Chauhan and Ms. Harleen Arora – Degradation of moral values in higher education: A cause for students unrest, Ms. Sakshi -New trends in Indian Higher section and Ms. Subha Chopra. Prof. Dr. Amit Kauts, Head, Department of Education GNDU was the Chairperson for technical session –II. Dr. Amit Kauts said that student is very empowered today as far as technology is concerned the teachers have to visualize how they can use this technology in the best possible way.The seminar concluded with the reading of report by Dr. Sushma Manocha. The Certificates were given to the paper presenters in the Valedictory session.
