NSS
NSS Unit of the college enrolled 375 volunteers in the year 2010-11 & participated in various social welfare programmes. Volunteers’ involvement in various community service projects, like their help and assistance to inmates of old age home 'Milvartan', students of DAV Red Cross School for Special Children is commendable.
Objectives
- To enrich the student's personality and deepen her understanding of the social environment in which she lives.
- To develop socio economic awareness and encourage the students to impart the same to the illiterate community of the area adopted.
- To develop socio economic activities designed to tackle social problems.
Incentives
The college awards concessions and incentives to the best NSS Volunteers. The volunteers get additional 3 percent marks in aggregate for seeking admission to higher class after graduation. Punjab State Youth Award of Rs.5000/- is given to volunteers who give distinguished social and national services.
Nature of work undertaken
Six day Camp (Oct.12-18, 2010)
- Volunteers made various gift items for Exhibition-cum-Sale on Diwali.
- A yoga camp was also organized for the volunteers by S. Avan Prashar, city head of Patanjali Yog Peeth, Amritsar.
During the Camp, Mr. Tarun Chugh, President Youth Development Board, Punjab & Mr. K.N. Kaul, Principal DAV College, Amritsar addressed the volunteers on social issues.
- Volunteers also visited the three adopted Institutions of NSS unit -DAV Red Cross School for special Children, Village Qila Jiwan Singh & BBK DAV School, Yaseen Road, Amritsar and undertook projects for the welfare of the youth, women & children.
Other Activities
- A Vocational Training Workshop was organized by NSS unit at adopted Village “Qila Jiwan Singh” for the girl students of “Skilled Training Center”. During this workshop 50 girls learned stitching & embroidery skills for self-employment at a nominal fee of Rs. 50/- a month.
- The NSS Volunteers initiated a new campaign “Adopt One Special Child” for needy students of DAV Red Cross School. The NSS Unit has maintained a page on social networking site Facebook to raise funds and aware people about DAV Red Cross School for Special Children.
- In collaboration with “Women & Children Society for Rural Technology”, a leading NGO, a rally was organized to raise a voice against 'Terrorism & Violence' on Oct.31, 2010. 150 Volunteers participated in the rally under the aegis of Principal Dr. Mrs. Neelam Kamra & Sh. O.P. Soni, former Mayor, Amritsar.
- An NSS Volunteer, Ms. Himneet Kaur, is giving free coaching to the weak & needy students.
- NSS unit observed SADHBHAVNA DIWAS on Aug.20, 2010 at DAV Red Cross School for Special Children where Principal Dr. Mrs. Neelam Kamra motivated the volunteers & special children to promote National Integration & Communal Harmony.
- College NSS unit joined hands with UNDP (United Nations Development Programme) on June.22,2010 for creating “Young Green Champions ” for a responsible citizen force, to link with XIX COMMON WEALTH GAMES. 50 Volunteers participated in the Queen's Baton Route on June 25 to spread awareness about Green Consciousness & Low Carbon Practices & Consumption Patterns for a Sustainable, Safer & Spirited World.
Funds Raised
- To celebrate Rakhi with the students of DAV Red Cross School for special children, the volunteers initiated Rakhi celebration drive in the College and collected Rs.10,165 from the sale of self-made Rakhis in an Exhibition.
- A fund of Rs. 52,000/- was raised by NSS unit of College through Charity Venture “SAANJH” at Alpha One, Amritsar. The money has been used to support three institutions - DAV Red Cross School for Special Children, BBK DAV School, Yaseen Road, Amritsar & Village Qila Jiwan Singh.
